PhotoVoice for

Community Engagement

PhotoVoice is an established participatory technique where community members capture images and create photo captions to share individual and community strengths and challenges. The individuals impacted by these challenges examine their experiences through the photographic lens and make connections through group sharing of images and discussing possible solutions to their challenges.

Final images and stories are disseminated locally, nationally, and globally through exhibitions and online platforms. PhotoVoice has the potential to benefit anyone but is often used with marginalized groups to record their often-overlooked experiences and perspectives on social issues.

Participants in this visual workshop will

  • Remember a basic history of photography.

  • Understand how camera lenses view the world.

  • Apply basic camera principles and creative practices using the historic and nontoxic cyanotype process.

  • Analyze the cyanotypes created during the workshop using the given prompts.

  • Evaluate their work and the work of their peers in a restful manner through guided group sharing.

  • Create a pop-up exhibition highlighting the participants' final cyanotype.
